Young man dies after being struck by cow at Spanish village festival

A 21-year-old man from Martorell, near Barcelona, has died after suffering devastating injuries when he was struck by a cow during traditional festival celebrations in the Castellón village of Tírig on Sunday August 2.

The incident happened during the town’s annual patron saint festivities, where bous al carrer events form part of the programme. Despite being rushed to hospital and receiving specialist treatment, the young man died several days later from his injuries, leaving both Tírig and his hometown in mourning.

Accident unfolded during traditional event

According to reports, the accident took place on Sunday morning as participants gathered inside the enclosed route used for the cattle. Witnesses said the 21-year-old was attempting to move between the wooden safety barriers when a cow charged, knocking him to the ground.

The impact caused a severe head injury, prompting an immediate emergency response. Paramedics stabilised him at the scene before he was taken to hospital and later transferred to the Hospital General de Castellón, where he remained in intensive care.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries over the weekend.

Festivities halted after tragedy

The fatal accident cast a shadow over what should have been one of the village’s biggest annual celebrations.

Following the incident, Tírig Town Hall suspended the remaining festival events. After the young man’s death was confirmed, the council issued a statement expressing its condolences to his family and friends, describing the village as united in grief.

Martorell Town Hall also paid tribute to the 21-year-old, sending its support to his loved ones and acknowledging the profound impact his death had on the local community.

Traditional festivals remain under scrutiny

The tragedy is expected to reignite debate surrounding bous al carrer, a long-standing tradition in parts of the Valencian Community in which bulls or cows are released into enclosed streets while participants voluntarily enter the course.

Supporters argue the events are an important part of local culture and heritage, while critics continue to raise concerns about public safety and animal welfare.

Although thousands of these celebrations take place across Spain every year without serious incident, injuries are an accepted risk, and fatal accidents, while uncommon, continue to occur. Each tragedy inevitably renews calls to examine whether existing safety measures are sufficient to protect those taking part.

Authorities have not indicated that any further investigation into the circumstances of the incident is expected beyond the standard procedures that follow accidental deaths.
