Christmas came early in Nerja as Zambombas al Fresquito brought festive cheer to the crowds

Who says Christmas belongs only to December? Residents and visitors in Nerja proved this isn’t the case after festive traditions arrived in the middle of summer, turning a warm August evening into a celebration of music and local heritage.

Balmy hot summer evening filled with Christmas tradition

Nerja swapped its usual soundtrack of summer for the unmistakable sound of Andalucian Christmas carols on Saturday, August 1, as Zambombas al Fresquito visited the town for the first time.

Beginning at 8pm, a colourful procession of pastoral groups made its way through the historic centre, passing the Balcon de Europa, Calle Carmen, Plaza Cavana, Calle El Barrio and Calle Malaga before arriving at Plaza de los Cangrejos, where the evening’s main performances began at 9.30pm. Traditional villancicos echoed through the streets as residents and visitors paused to enjoy an event rarely seen outside the Christmas season.

First stop outside the area of Mijas

Nerja became the first town outside Mijas to host the travelling version of Zambombas al Fresquito, an initiative organised by the Asociacion Amigos del Zambombeo to promote Malaga’s pastoral tradition in different towns across the province.

Local officials welcomed the festival during its presentation, describing it as an “opportunity to preserve a unique part of Malaga’s cultural heritage while introducing it to new audiences during the busy summer season”. Organisers summed up the concept with a simple question: “¿En agosto? ¿Por qué no?” – “In August? Why not?”

Five well-known pastoral groups took part in the celebration. Each group performed a selection of traditional carols and popular Christmas songs, accompanied by guitars, tambourines, zambombas and other instruments closely associated with Malaga’s pastoral music.

Spirit of community at Plaza de los Cangrejos

Plaza de los Cangrejos provided the perfect setting for the evening concert after the procession ran through the town centre. Members of the Las Protegidas Neighbourhood Association also operated a food and drink bar during the event, but it was music that remained firmly at the heart of the celebration, with each pastoral group contributing its own interpretation of traditional Christmas tunes passed down through generations.

Christmas may still be months away, but for a few hours in Nerja, festive spirit arrived early, and nobody seemed to mind.
