Caught red-handed: Man caught starting a fire while firefighters battled nearby blazes

Not every fire in Spain has climate change to blame and that is exactly what happened in Ledesma, Salamanca, where the Guardia Civil arrested a 27-year-old man who was caught red handed after he was found carrying petrol and not one but five lighters in his pockets, all while firefighters were already battling several fires in the surrounding areas. A witness reportedly spotted the man crouching beside the SA-305 and apparently attempting to start another fire.

The arrest was made last week near La Samasa, an area belonging to Ledesma, after several fires had broken out alongside the road. More than a dozen firefighting resources were deployed to tackle the blaze, which was brought under control at around 8:00pm. Investigators are examining whether the man was responsible for any of the fires already burning and whether he intended to start more. The suspect is a 27-year-old French national. He was brought before a judge following his arrest and placed in provisional custody while the investigation continues. He reportedly gave evidence with the assistance of a translator.

Witness spots man near the fires

The witness who alerted the Guardia Civil was in the area while emergency crews were dealing with the outbreaks. According to the information passed to officers, the man was crouching beside the road and appeared to be trying to start another fire. Officers went to the location and detained him.

The report came while the firefighting operation was still under way. The fire near La Samasa required more than a dozen resources, with crews working through the evening before bringing the blaze under control. The location beside the SA-305 is now part of the evidence being examined as authorities piece together what happened before the arrest. The witness account, material recovered by officers and evidence from the affected area will be examined to establish whether the fire was deliberately started and whether the suspect can be connected to it.

Investigators examine possible links

Authorities are also examining several other fire outbreaks reported in the surrounding area. The purpose is to establish whether there is evidence connecting the incidents or whether the fires began separately. The fact that the man was found close to an active fire does not, by itself, prove that he was responsible for every outbreak nearby. Each fire has to be considered on its own, with investigators looking at the evidence available from the individual locations.

The investigation concerns several fires in the same area rather than one single point of ignition. Authorities must determine which events can be linked and which cannot. Investigators are also examining what happened immediately before the arrest, including the reported sighting beside the road and evidence from the surrounding area.

Suspect remains in provisional custody

Following the arrest, the man appeared before a judge and was ordered to remain in provisional custody. He remains detained while the judicial investigation continues, but this does not amount to a conviction. His appearance before the court took place with the assistance of a translator, according to oficial reports.

The next stage will depend on the evidence collected by investigators. If investigators establish that a fire was deliberately started, they will also have to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to attribute that act to the suspect. Any connection to additional outbreaks would need to be supported separately.

Fire comes during difficult summer conditions

High temperatures continue to persist throughout the country, conditions that can make fires difficult to contain once they begin. That does not, however, determine the cause of an individual blaze. In Ledesma, the question is much more specific. For residents in the Ledesma area, their immediate concern was containing the flames but as of now, for the Guardia Civil and the courts, their focus is to establishing how the fires began and whether the man arrested near the scene was responsible for any of them. The 27-year-old remains in provisional custody while those proceedings continue.
