Torrevieja welcomes 438,000 people as the city swells almost four times its size

Torrevieja is bursting into life this August, with new estimates suggesting as many as 438,000 people could be staying in the city at the height of the summer season.

With around 113,000 residents registered on the municipal population roll, the figures mean Torrevieja is effectively becoming almost four times its normal size as residents, second-home owners and holidaymakers come together for the busiest weeks of the year.

Population soars during the summer

The estimates come from a technical report prepared for Torrevieja Town Hall, providing a striking picture of just how dramatically the community changes each summer.

July’s equivalent population is estimated at around 414,000, rising to 438,000 during August. Even in September, around 348,000 people could still be using the city’s homes, streets and services.

Torrevieja’s huge number of second homes plays a major role in the seasonal increase. The municipality has more than 62,000 second homes, while only around 1,600 hotel places are available across 14 hotels.

To understand the city’s true summer population, technicians examined indicators including water consumption and rubbish collection, providing a clearer picture of how many people are actually staying in Torrevieja during the busiest months.

Services face extraordinary demand

The figures are staggering. During August, Torrevieja could produce around 9.9 million kilos of household waste, equivalent to approximately 320 tonnes every day.

Water demand also climbs sharply, while roads, parking, health centres and other essential services must accommodate hundreds of thousands more people.

For local businesses, the summer influx brings busy restaurants, shops and leisure venues, while the beaches of La Mata, Los Locos, Playa del Cura, Los Naufragos and Acequion fill with families and visitors.

The city’s attractions are also drawing crowds, from a packed programme of summer events to the new Paseo del Mar development at the port.

A city transformed by summer

But behind the impressive numbers is a community facing an extraordinary seasonal transformation.

For several weeks each summer, Torrevieja is no longer simply a city of 113,000 residents. It becomes home to a population comparable with some of Spain’s largest cities, with locals, international residents and visitors all sharing the same streets, beaches and services.

The dramatic increase highlights both Torrevieja’s enormous popularity as a summer destination and the challenge of providing services and infrastructure for a population that changes so significantly throughout the year.

And when August arrives, Torrevieja doesn’t just get busier. It becomes an entirely different city.
