Residents in the coastal town of El Campello will now have an additional financial incentive to be environmentally conscious: the town is introducing a new system that will directly refund residents who recycle. The initiative comes as an effort to boost sustainability by promoting recycling, and ease financial pressure on local households, all while rewarding responsible citizens.
How the tax discount scheme works: Rewarding citizens for using municipal recycling centres
Under the new initiative, residents who properly sort their household waste and use municipal recycling facilities will qualify for discounts on their annual rubbish tax, also known as the tasa de basuras. The system will use digital tracking technology, like smart cards or mobile applications, or ID registration at local eco-parks and organic waste containers in order to register each participant’s contributions. The more consistently a household recycles materials including plastics, glass, paper, and organic waste, the greater the discount applied to their tax bill. These discounts will range anywhere from €5 to €100, depending on the amount of waste recycled.
What you can recycle at mobile eco-parks
This measure is founded on an agreement by Consorci Mare, the entity that manages waste treatment for 52 municipalities in the Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, and El Campello regions. Consorci Mare also manages the eco-park mobile recycling centres, where any citizen can recycle waste that doesn’t fit in the regular street containers for plastics, paper, cardboard, and glass.
Additionally, at these eco-parks, residents can recycle aerosols, filters, footwear, tyres, books, textiles, small and medium-sized electrical appliances, video tapes, CDs, batteries, X-rays, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, lighters, metals or wood, as well as other materials.
The centres are set up on Wednesdays on Avenida de la Estación, next to the Local Police Headquarters, and on Fridays on Calle Higuera de Muchavista.
A blueprint for sustainable living on the Costa Blanca
As El Campello rolls out this novel system, it serves as a forward-thinking blueprint for other coastal and regional towns in Alicante, demonstrating that environmental sustainability and financial savings can go hand in hand, and that citizen responsibility and environmental consciousness should not go unrewarded.
