Man killed after his own car rolls into him at popular Spanish reservoir

A routine evening of fishing ended in tragedy after a man was killed when his own vehicle rolled over him at a reservoir in central Spain.

The fatal accident happened on Monday Augut 24 evening at the Buendía Reservoir in the province of Cuenca, where emergency services were called after the man became trapped beneath his car.

Vehicle rolled while he was fishing

According to emergency services in Castilla-La Mancha, the incident occurred at around 9.15pm near the reservoir access from the CM-2000 road.

The man had parked his vehicle close to the water while he was fishing. Investigators believe the car had not been properly secured with the handbrake. It began to roll downhill, striking him before pinning him underneath.

The accident left the victim trapped beneath the vehicle, prompting an urgent response from the emergency services.

Rescue teams could not save him

Firefighters from Tarancón were sent to the scene and worked to free the man from beneath the vehicle.

Despite their efforts, the injuries proved fatal. An emergency doctor who attended the scene was only able to confirm the man’s death.

Officers from the Civil Guard also attended and have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Popular fishing spot

The Buendía Reservoir is one of the largest inland reservoirs in Castilla-La Mancha and is a well-known destination for anglers, water sports enthusiasts and visitors looking to enjoy the countryside.

While the area is generally considered safe, Monday’s tragedy serves as a stark reminder that even a simple oversight can have devastating consequences.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim, and investigations into the accident remain ongoing. Early indications suggest the incident was a tragic accident, with no other vehicles or people involved.

The case is expected to be formally examined by the Civil Guard as part of the standard procedure following a fatal accident.
