A simple yoga class in Jávea is set to become something much bigger this weekend as the local community comes together to support families devastated by catastrophic flooding in Nepal.

In the wake of the deadly natural disaster, yoga teachers across the Marina Alta are joining forces for #YogaForNepal, a fundraising initiative designed to provide immediate help for those who have lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones. The campaign comes as rescue teams continue searching for survivors after the Himalayan floods claimed more than 1,000 lives and left thousands missing.

A day of charity classes

The main programme takes place on Saturday, September 5, with a series of yoga, tai chi and wellness sessions hosted at studios in Jávea, Gata de Gorgos and Jesús Pobre.

Activities begin at Bodhi Integral Health Studio in the port of Jávea with an early morning Ashtanga yoga class, followed by tai chi and a Tibetan singing bowl session. Elsewhere, additional classes will be held throughout the morning before an evening Bikram yoga session rounds off the day. A final Viniyoga class is also planned for Sunday morning in Gata de Gorgos.

Organisers are inviting everyone to take part, whether they are experienced practitioners or complete beginners.

Every donation will make a difference

Participants are encouraged to contribute €12, although organisers stress that any donation, no matter how small, will be welcomed.

Money raised will go to Build Up Nepal, a charity that has spent more than a decade helping vulnerable communities build safe, affordable and disaster-resistant homes. Following the recent floods, the organisation is focusing on providing emergency shelter before helping families rebuild their lives.

Those unable to attend can still support the campaign by donating through the associated online fundraiser, ensuring people can contribute from anywhere.

Local compassion with global impact

Although centred in the Marina Alta, the initiative is part of an international movement, with yoga communities in countries including Australia and Sweden also organising fundraising events under the #YogaForNepal banner.

For organisers, the event is about more than exercise. It is a chance for people in Jávea to show solidarity with communities thousands of kilometres away, proving that even a single yoga class can help provide shelter, hope and practical support to families facing unimaginable loss.
