At an age when many people have long since stepped away from competitive sport, Pepi Sánchez Quintana has achieved a remarkable international victory.

The 76-year-old athlete from Antequera, Málaga, has been crowned world champion in the 400 metres at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, showing that sporting ambition does not necessarily come with an expiry date.

Dramatic finish in South Korea

Competing in the F75 category for athletes aged between 75 and 79, Sánchez completed the one-lap race in 1 minute and 25.33 seconds.

The Spanish athlete who has sparked an outpouring of local pride had to fight all the way to the finish, eventually pulling clear of Britain’s Roberts and American competitor Harmon to take the gold medal.

Her victory represents the biggest achievement yet in an athletics career that began surprisingly late.

Unlike many elite athletes, Sánchez did not spend her childhood and teenage years training on the track. She had previously been involved in activities including cycling and mountain sports, but only took up competitive athletics when she was approaching 70.

A remarkable rise through the ranks

Sánchez’s progress since taking up athletics has been extraordinary.

In 2021, only around a year and a half after focusing specifically on the sport, she became Spanish masters champion over both 400m and 800m. She also set Spanish records in the M70 category, recording times of around 1:27 for the 400m and 3:22 for the 800m.

Her performances continued to improve. In 2023, she lowered her 400m national record to 1:24.31, underlining her rapid development despite being considerably older than most competitive runners.

Now competing in the F75 age group, she added another Spanish record to her collection earlier this year, running the 200m in 37.46 seconds in Antequera.

Inspiring a whole community

The world title has been greeted with enormous pride in Antequera, where local officials have congratulated Sánchez on taking the city’s name onto the international sporting stage.

Her achievement also carries a powerful message beyond the athletics track. Sánchez’s story demonstrates that taking up a new challenge later in life can lead to achievements that might once have seemed impossible.

After years of progression, national titles and records, she has now added the biggest prize of all: world champion over 400 metres at 76.

Her victory in Daegu is not simply another medal. It is the latest chapter in an extraordinary sporting journey that began when most people would have considered their competitive days long over.
