The Region of Murcia International Airport is expanding its international route network with a brand new direct flight connecting the Spanish region to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Operated by airline Transavia, the service will officially launch on March 30, 2027, offering three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, in an effort to boost connectivity and convenient travel for residents and visitors in the region.
Connecting Amsterdam with Murcia
This connection will not only facilitate convenient travel for local residents, but will also significantly boost inbound visitors from the Netherlands, a primary tourism market for the region. Carmen Conesa, the regional Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, emphasised that the addition of this route is a major advancement in strengthening Murcia’s presence across important European countries.
The importance of appealing to Dutch visitors: the Netherlands, enamoured with the Costa Calida
Recent data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute, or INE, highlighted the importance of appealing to Dutch tourists. Between January and July 2026, the Netherlands ranked as the fourth-largest source of foreign tourists to the Region of Murcia, accounting for a whopping 54,796 visitors, or 7.4 per cent of all international tourists.
The economic impact of Dutch visitors is even more noticeable: during the same period, travellers from the Netherlands generated €97.7 million in regional spending, representing 9.9 per cent of total foreign tourism spending and officially making the Netherlands Murcia’s third-largest international market by spending.
Murcia strengthening international presence and outpacing other airports
The route’s announcement comes at a time of strong momentum at the Murcia International Airport. Statistics released by Aena, a leading company for airport infrastructure, show that the facility processed 575,312 passengers during the first seven months of the year, representing a 9 per cent year-on-year increase. It also significantly outpaced Aena’s average network growth rate of 4 per cent.
According to the data, total flight operations also increased by 15.9 per cent, reaching 4,894 flights. With direct access already established to seven countries and 20 European destinations during the summer, this direct route to Schiphol, one of Europe’s busiest transit hubs, re-establishes Murcia’s position as an international tourist hub in southeastern Spain.
Tickets to go on sale on September 16: travellers to leap at the opportunity
Those in the Region of Murcia who are itching to explore the Netherlands, or vice versa, will not have to wait long to take advantage of this deal: tickets for this new route are set to go on sale for the first time on Wednesday, September 16 at 9:00am, through Transavia’s official website.
With this new connection, the Region of Murcia will establish a deeper relationship with the Netherlands and its visitors, in preparation for a fantastic winter holiday season and a booming 2027 for tourism.
