Summer refuses to leave as temperatures soar again with some orange warnings for storms in Spain

Summer is refusing to give up its grip on Spain, with temperatures set to climb again just days before the official start of autumn.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) says much of the country is heading back towards summer-like conditions after several days of rain and storms.

Temperatures are expected to rise across the country over the coming days, with some areas forecast to record readings more than 30ºC.

For people living on the Costa del Sol and elsewhere in southern Spain, the message is clear: there is little sign of autumn arriving just yet.

Spain’s never-ending summer

AEMET’s latest forecasts show stable weather returning across much of Spain this weekend, although some areas of the southeast can still expect showers and storms. The strongest remaining instability is expected in parts of Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, where yellow and orange weather warnings are in place for Saturday, especially in the areas of Javea and Denia. The Strait of Gibraltar is warning of yellow alerts too around the Algeciras, Tarifa and up as far as Sotogrande, so expect choppy conditions for ferry crossings.

The rest of Andalucia, meanwhile, is expected to see generally settled conditions, although showers could develop in some eastern mountain areas. Temperatures are expected to stay high, with parts of the region reaching the low to mid-30s.

The agency has warned that the warmth will continue into next week, with temperatures in many parts of Spain expected to be between 5ºC and 10ºC above the normal average for this time of year. That could make the official arrival of autumn on September 23 feel rather theoretical for many residents.

Recent weather has provided a taste of something different, with heavy rain and thunderstorms affecting parts of Spain. But AEMET’s latest outlook suggests that period of unsettled weather is giving way to a return to dry and warmer conditions.

On the Costa del Sol, early Saturday temperatures were already around the mid-20s in places. AEMET observations recorded 25ºC in Marbella during the early morning, while Malaga city was at 23.5ºC at 5am.

Can we switch the air-con off yet?

The coming days could therefore see residents reaching for the fans and air conditioning once again rather than putting away their summer clothes. For anyone hoping for cooler autumn temperatures, the forecast offers little encouragement for now. So, no need to take out the duvet just yet.

AEMET’s outlook does suggest that conditions could become more changeable later next week, particularly in northern Spain, but the south is expected to stay warmer. So while the calendar may soon say autumn, the weather across much of Spain appears to have other ideas.
