Could this be the end of mosquito bites on your terrace?

Fed up with mosquitoes ruining your evening on the terrace? As more humid air creeps in and rain drops fill the plant-pot trays, the pesky mozzies are back. A bizarre new gadget claims to offer a futuristic solution, by hunting the little pests down with lasers.

Photon Matrix is a mosquito-killing device that uses LiDAR, radar, AI vision and a laser to detect flying mosquitoes and zap them out of the air. Yes, seriously.

Rather than spraying yourself with foul-smelling repellent or furiously waving a fly swatter around after dark, the machine is designed to sit quietly on your terrace and automatically look for mosquitoes on a futuristic search-and-destroy mission.

A laser mosquito killer for your terrace

According to the company, Photon Matrix can detect flying insects measuring between 2mm and 20mm and travelling at up to 1 metre per second. Its claimed detection range is up to six metres, although the device scans a 90-degree area rather than the whole garden.

Once it identifies a suitable target, the system tracks the insect and fires a short laser pulse designed to disable its wings. An accompanying smartphone app lets owners monitor the device, check mosquito activity and even see how many insects have been eliminated.

There is also a rather amusing global ranking feature for anyone who wants to turn mosquito killing into a competitive sport.

How much does Photon Matrix cost?

This is where the idea gets considerably less amusing. It is new technology and the price tag reminds you so. Photon Matrix is currently available to pre-order from its official online store.

The outdoor blue-laser version costs $1,088, while the indoor infrared version costs $988. Both prices currently include a 15 per cent discount, according to the manufacturer’s website.

Orders are currently being taken on a pre-order basis, with the company saying they should ship within 120 days. Worldwide shipping is included, although buyers are responsible for any applicable import duties, taxes or customs charges. Anyone in Spain ordering one should therefore check the final cost at checkout before reaching for the credit card.

Which version should you buy?

For a terrace, garden or outdoor dining area, the blue-laser version is the one designed for outdoor use. It produces a visible blue flash when the system targets an insect. An infrared version is intended mainly for indoor use and operates without the visible blue flash, making it more suitable for bedrooms and living rooms.

Photon Matrix says the device is plug-and-play, so it does not require professional installation. There is one important caveat, however. The manufacturer lists the internal laser as Class 4, even though the system has several safety features and is enclosed. It should therefore be treated as a serious laser device rather than a novelty gadget.

Where can you buy the mosquito laser?

Photon Matrix says customers should buy through its official store or authorised channels, warning that fake websites have appeared selling counterfeit or non-existent products. For the outdoor terrace version, the official store is currently listing the blue laser model at $1,088, with an EU plug option available.

Whether spending around €1,000 to stop mosquitoes biting you on the terrace is better than buying a bottle of repellent is, of course, another question.

And if you are dealing with the Asian tiger mosquito in your garden, getting rid of standing water in plant pots, buckets and other containers is still one of the simplest ways to reduce breeding sites.

A recent EWN report also explained why citronella is not reliable mosquito protection, making the prospect of a laser-powered alternative rather more intriguing.

But if you have ever spent a Spanish summer night trying to find the mosquito that has been biting your ankles for the last hour, there is something strangely satisfying about the thought of putting a laser on the terrace and letting technology fight back.
