Major Barcelona bus disruption as workers strike today

If you’re facing a commute to work in Barcelona today, or you’re visiting the city and planned to hop on a bus to get around, you could be in for a frustrating journey.

Thousands of passengers are facing major disruption as TMB bus workers walk out today, with services slashed for several hours during a seven-hour strike.

The industrial action is set to leave just a fraction of Barcelona’s usual bus network operating between the morning and afternoon, meaning longer waits, crowded alternative services and potentially much longer journeys for commuters and visitors alike.

When is the Barcelona bus strike?

Workers on Barcelona’s TMB bus network are on strike Tuesday, September 22, with the industrial action running from 10am until 5pm.

The strike affects the city’s regular bus services operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), meaning passengers travelling across Barcelona and parts of the metropolitan area could face longer waits and reduced services.

The Generalitat de Catalunya has ordered minimum services to ensure some buses continue operating during the walkout.

From 10am until 4pm, just 20 per cent of the usual bus service will operate.

The minimum service level will then increase to 40 per cent between 4pm and 5pm, before normal services are due to resume after the strike ends.

A minimum of one neighbourhood bus service per line will also be maintained during the stoppage.

Why are Barcelona bus workers striking?

The industrial action comes amid a dispute over the negotiation of a new collective agreement for TMB’s bus workers.

Trade unions representing the workforce say negotiations have failed to make sufficient progress despite 23 meetings with the company.

The unions involved in the strike are ACAT, ACTUB, CCOO, CGT, SIT and UGT. Their demands include a 35-hour working week, improved rest periods for drivers, salary increases, changes to working calendars and increased staffing.

The workers’ representatives have described the negotiations as having reached a critical point and have called for further action over what they say is a lack of progress.

TMB, meanwhile, says negotiations remain open and that it continues to work with the unions towards an agreement under the new municipal collective agreement.

Metro services continue

The bus strike does not mean Barcelona’s entire public transport network is shutting down.

The city’s metro service is operated separately from the bus network and is not included in today’s strike. It is therefore expected to operate normally, providing an alternative for passengers whose journeys can be completed by underground routes.

However, passengers switching from buses to the metro should expect potentially busier stations and trains as some commuters look for alternative ways to travel.

TMB has advised passengers to check the latest service information before setting out, as the impact of the strike can vary throughout the day.

Workers to decide on further action

Today’s strike is also linked to an extraordinary general meeting being held by the workforce.

The meeting is scheduled for 12.30pm at the Cotxeres de Sants, where workers are expected to discuss whether to begin another period of industrial action.

That means today’s disruption could form part of a wider dispute if employees vote for further mobilisation.

The timing of the strike also comes just as Barcelona prepares for the La Mercè festivities, which begin on Wednesday, September 23, potentially adding another layer of pressure to the city’s transport network.
