Even as Spain prepares to welcome October, many locals and expatriates are still finding themselves wearing shorts and t-shirts, as many areas of the country are still scorching under the sun. However, Jorge Rey, a young Spanish meteorologist famed for his ancient and eerily accurate method of predicting the weather, called the cabañuelas method, is warning that although this autumn will be warmer than usual, cold weather is still on the horizon, and he has the exact dates to back it up.

Jorge Rey’s end-of-year predictions: details and exact dates for storms and temperature plunges

September

For the remainder of September, according to Jorge Rey, Spain will continue to experience heat. Weak storms in the northern part of Africa will reach Spain’s southeastern mountains, particularly in the regions of Murcia and Alicante. There will be an anticyclone causing heat in the west of Spain, and the very final days of September will see weak showers in the west and south, as well as cooler weather in the north.

October

October will greet Spain with calm and warmer weather in the west, as well as haze in the Canary Islands. On October 9, there will be stormy showers in the west and the south, reaching the Mediterranean, as well as a risk of frost in many areas of Spain. At the beginning of the Pilar long weekend, which spans from October 10 to October 12, the Levante region will face stormy days, and the north will experience cooler weather and light rain.

On October 12, an African air mass will bring heat to the east of Spain, with cloudiness and localised storms in the west. On October 17, the north of Spain will have more cloudiness with light rain in the Cantabrian region. However, according to Jorge Rey, the weather will improve in the following days.

The strong anticyclone will end by October 23 and 24, and a front will enter from the west, bringing storms and rain that will spread across the entire northern half of the country, including areas of the central peninsula, accompanied by milder, autumnal temperatures.

On October 27, most of the country will experience pleasant weather again, but the north and the western Cantabrian coast will still have ups and downs due to fronts, along with cooler and more humid air.

November

November will also be rainy in Spain. November 3, 4, 8, and 9 will see an Atlantic front bringing significant rainfall across the western half of the country, and cooling the weather notably.

On November 10 and 11, rain will be prominent in the northern Mediterranean, affecting several areas including Catalonia. Calm weather will return until November 14, when, according to Jorge Rey, much of the country can expect frost. On this day, a DANA will also arrive in Spain, leading to cool and damp days in the north and heavy storms in the Levante region, until around November 17.

On November 21, Atlantic storms will arrive and bring heat towards the Mediterranean and rain in the northwest and generalised storms in the west until November 25. The country will experience pleasant temperatures for two or three days until November 27 when an Atlantic front will bring new rain to the west and notable coolness. On this day, the country will also see its first snow at very high altitudes.

December

Finally, December will begin with more pleasant weather. There could be a small DANA on December 5 that could cause strong storms in the south of Spain, in areas like Cadiz or Malaga, though Jorge states it is unlikely.

On December 8, there will be storms in the Canary Islands, and on December 9, rain will reach the north and even the centre. On this day, Spain will also experience its first temperature drop of the season. From this day, there will be significant snowfall in the mountains and mid-altitudes, as well as a clear arrival of frost.

On December 16, there will be another northern front, causing rains in the Levante area. In the following days, the atmosphere will calm, with the country experiencing more pleasant and sunny days that will likely last until Christmas. According to Jorge Rey’s prediction, in the final days of 2026, the rains will return in the east.
