Spain wedding spirals into chaos as €40k row and cheating allegation sparks brawl

A heated argument, an alleged cheating bride, broken glass, and a €40,000 squabble: the Guardia Civil was forced to intervene in a wedding reception held in Ourense on Saturday, September 19 after an altercation between family members quickly spiralled out of control. Initial reports stated that, due to the incident, the married couple were allegedly separating even before their wedding night.

The incident took place at A Casa da Tulla in Gomesende, Ourense, an idyllic 17th-century manor on the border with Portugal with a private pool and garden. A couple had got married and were holding their wedding reception in the beautiful estate; however, the celebration quickly got out of hand when members of the two families clashed.

According to reports by local outlets Efe and La Región, the bride reportedly demanded €40,000 worth of wedding gifts. Though the couple had reportedly made a prenuptial agreement that the bride would receive the gifts before the wedding, the groom allegedly refused to give them to her.

After this, the altercation turned ugly. Family members from both parties allegedly broke out into a large brawl, in which shouting, physical violence, and hair-pulling was reported. The fight broke out in the banquet area of the wedding, and some of the tableware and glassware were broken in the melee.

The Guardia Civil were called and they rushed to the scene, but by the time the officers arrived, the fight had already calmed down. Broken plates and glasses belonging to the catering service hired for the wedding littered the floor, according to reports. Subsequently, the managers of the venue explained to Efe that the incident did not occur inside the manor but rather in a tent that had been set up outside, so there was no material damage to the house.

According to reports, despite the intensity of the fight, neither of the families filed a formal complaint with the police. On the contrary, the groom’s father allegedly offered to take responsibility for the damages.

However, the scale of the fight is not the most shocking report from the incident. According to some reports, the bride allegedly went to the restroom with a young man involved in organising the event, and had intimate relations with him there during the altercation. Initial reports claim that the bride had stated she already wanted a divorce from her husband and had contacted a lawyer, on the basis that she had no feelings for him.

Notwithstanding, there are conflicting reports regarding the event, as outlet La Región reported that the newlyweds themselves deny that the infidelity occurred, and maintain that they are still together and living in A Coruña in the groom’s home. According to the groom, they are both working. He also denies that there was ever a €40,000 prenuptial agreement between them.

Mysteries, alleged infidelity, and conflicting reports aside, what was meant to be a day of joy and celebration of the union of two families quickly devolved into chaos. While questions are swirling about the motive for the fight and the relationship between the newlywed couple, the broken plates and glasses are evidence enough for the Guardia Civil that something at this wedding went horribly awry.
