Nearly 500 join Costa Blanca charity walk to support families living with Alzheimer’s

Nearly 500 people stepped out together on Sunday, September 20, as four Costa Blanca South communities united for a major charity walk supporting people living with Alzheimer’s and their families.

The United against Alzheimer’s community march linked San Fulgencio, Formentera del Segura, Benijofar and Rojales, turning an 8.2-kilometre route into a colourful show of solidarity while raising almost €2,000 for AFA Torrevieja.

Four communities unite for Alzheimer’s charity walk

The walk began at 9:00 AM in San Fulgencio, with participants making their way through four neighbouring municipalities before reaching the Malecon del Soto in Rojales at around 11:30 AM.

Nearly 500 people joined the event, bringing together residents from across the area for a morning focused on fundraising, awareness and community support.

Walkers were joined by health professionals, associations, local institutions and community groups, with the event also recognising the important contribution made every day by families and carers supporting people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The atmosphere remained festive and family-friendly throughout the morning, with fruit and refreshments provided along the route before participants gathered for the closing event in Rojales.

Almost €2,000 raised for AFA Torrevieja

The community walk had already raised €1,993 for AFA Torrevieja, with organisers saying the final figure is expected to increase as additional donations remain open following the event.

The money will support an organisation working with people affected by Alzheimer’s and their families, adding a fundraising purpose to a morning that also placed the spotlight on greater awareness and understanding.

By connecting four municipalities along one route, the event allowed neighbouring communities to demonstrate their support collectively rather than holding separate activities.

Walk promotes healthy ageing and dementia awareness

Organised through the Rojales Health Council, the initiative was also designed to promote healthy ageing and increase awareness of cognitive decline.

Greater understanding of Alzheimer’s and other dementias formed an important part of the event, alongside recognition of the experiences of families and carers.

For the hundreds who took part, the 8.2-kilometre journey demonstrated the strength of cooperation between neighbouring Costa Blanca communities.

By the time walkers reached Rojales at around 11:30 AM, the event had brought together nearly 500 people while raising money, increasing awareness and showing support for local families living with the effects of Alzheimer’s.
