Two teenagers rescued after getting lost near popular Dénia hiking hotspot

Two teenage hikers were rescued from the Montgó in Dénia after becoming lost during a route and running out of both food and water.

The 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy had been walking for around three hours when they became disorientated and were unable to continue safely.

The incident happened on Sunday, September 27, with emergency services receiving the alert at 4.44pm.

Helicopter and rescue team deployed

The Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium responded by sending its Alpha 01 rescue helicopter and members of the Group for Special Rescue (GER) to the Montgó.

The operation came as the two teenagers were left without essential supplies after becoming lost in the mountainous terrain.

The Montgó is a popular destination for hikers in the Marina Alta, but its rugged landscape can present challenges for walkers who stray from established routes.

The rescue team worked to locate the pair before bringing them safely out of the area.

Neither teenager was injured during the incident and they did not require medical treatment.

Rescue operation lasted more than two hours

Following the successful operation, the teenagers were taken to the Dénia fire station.

The incident was one of two rescues carried out by the Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium in the province that afternoon.

The emergency response in the Montgó followed another call involving a cyclist who had suffered injuries in Banyeres de Mariola. The helicopter and GER were also involved in that operation before attending the incident in Dénia.

The rescue highlights the importance of preparation when hiking in the Montgó, particularly for anyone unfamiliar with the mountain’s terrain.

Hikers are advised to plan routes carefully, carry sufficient water and food, check conditions before setting out and avoid continuing if they become lost or conditions deteriorate.

For the two teenagers, the incident ended safely after emergency crews located them and brought them back to Dénia.
