Velez-Malaga adds new cameras to tackle traffic problems and illegal rubbish dumping

Velez-Malaga is expanding its CCTV network with new cameras to monitor traffic and tackle illegal rubbish dumping, with the environmental project costing almost €50,000.

Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez announced the expansion during a visit to the Local Police headquarters, where officers can monitor the camera network from a central control room. Ten cameras are designated for traffic monitoring, covering busy roads and junctions across Velez-Malaga, Torre del Mar and surrounding areas. Locations in Velez-Malaga include Camino de Remanentes, Camino de Torrox, Avenida Vivar Téllez and the roundabout at El Ingenio shopping centre, a much complained about area.

Torre del Mar will also receive cameras at the football ground roundabout, the Río Seco junction on Camino de la Caleta, Calle Cipriano Maldonado Jiménez and Avenida Andalucia.

Even more devices will cover Calle Campo de la Iglesia in Benajarafe and the roundabout at the port in Caleta de Velez. Fellow Costa del Sol towns, such as Estepona and Coin have had great success with similar schemes recently, and it seems that the latest CCTV technology is finally starting to deal with the curse of fly-tipping.

Cameras target illegal rubbish dumping

Separate cameras will monitor two locations where rubbish is frequently dumped illegally: the container area at the entrance to Baviera, on Camino de la Caleta, and Calle Puerta de Granada. Local police will be monitoring footage in order to identify repeat offenders.

The environmental monitoring project has a budget of over €48,000 and includes 4G connectivity, lighting, loudspeakers and 10 Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. These sensors will measure how full rubbish containers are in real time, helping the council organise waste collection routes more efficiently.

Mayor Lupiáñez said the expansion would provide additional resources for those responsible for public safety and help improve day-to-day life across the town.
