Looking for a rewarding place to visit this autumn? Head to Ibiza!
The third largest of the Balearic Islands, it lounges in the western Mediterranean some 50 miles southwest of Majorca, combining history with a certain sunlit swagger. Historically, Ibiza was a big deal, hosting Phoenicians and Carthaginians, whose legacy lingers in archaeological sites now curated in the Archaeological Museum in Ibiza town.
Its terrain is a study in contrasts. Hills climb towards La Atalaya, while the northern coastline splits into rugged cliffs and hidden coves. Inland, terraces carve patterns in the slopes, sustaining a modest agricultural life that still produces almonds, figs and apricots. Salt, harvested from sun-drenched flats, has long been the island’s enduring export.
Beyond the beaches, Ibiza remains quietly rural. Farms and villages dot the countryside, preserving a slower rhythm of life. Yet the island hasn’t stood still. Recent large-scale tourism has increased its population (and local opinions may, and will, vary!), drawn by mild winters and sun-drenched shores.
Ibiza Town, San Antonio and Santa Eulària anchor this growth, blending tradition with modern energy. Recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 underscores what visitors quickly discover: Ibiza’s far more than a soundtrack of summer revelry and not simply a playground, but a place where nature, history and culture meet seamlessly.
