Denia is preparing to celebrate the 9 d’Octubre, or the Day of the Valencian Community, as well as the following weekend, with a packed programme of cultural, musical and family-friendly events, offering plenty for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Why Denia is celebrating October 9
The main celebrations on Friday, October 9 mark the Day of the Valencian Community, a date that commemorates the historic entry of King Jaume I into Valencia and is widely celebrated across the region with traditional festivities. Local municipalities and towns like Denia, though they are officially a part of the region of Alicante, annually celebrate this day as a way to honour Valencian neighbours and unite the provinces under a shared heritage.
What to expect on 9 d’octubre in this Costa Blanca hotspot
In Denia, this landmark holiday is set to be a highlight of October; the programme includes music and dance performances, followed by a lively schedule of activities throughout the town centre. Families can participate in children’s games and entertainment, while one of the standout attractions will be a giant paella prepared for around 1,000 people, allowing the community to unite, share, and socialise together.
The atmosphere will continue into the afternoon and evening of October 9, with live music taking over bustling areas, including La Glorieta. The celebrations will round out with a traditional mascletà at night, a pyrotechnics show that features rhythmic explosions of firecrackers and is a deeply rooted part of Valencian celebrations.
A weekend of fun-filled events for the whole family
However, the fun will not end when October 9 does. The celebrations will extend into the weekend, offering activities like a puppet workshop at the Biblioteca Juan Chabás; the Dia de la Pilota on Sunday, October 11, celebrating a traditional Valencian sport and bringing it to a wider audience through demonstrations and activities; and the first Aplec de Gegants i Bèsties de Foc, a colourful street event featuring giant figures and fire-based performances moving through the centre that will add a theatrical and visually striking element to the extended festivities.
Together, these events create a lively multi-day celebration for locals and visitors that blends tradition, gastronomy and entertainment, ensuring there is something for all ages in Denia on this special weekend.
