Moraira transformed its marina into a celebration of sailing and Mediterranean gastronomy last weekend as the 13th Gourmet Race brought together 32 boats and their crews for a unique competition on the water.
Held on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3, the popular event combined sailing with haute cuisine, challenging competitors to prepare a dish while navigating the Mediterranean before presenting their creations to a prestigious panel of culinary experts.
The competition once again proved popular, with demand for places exceeding the 32 available spots and a waiting list in place.
Crews faced a culinary challenge at sea
The unusual format of the Gourmet Race was at the heart of the weekend.
Competitors were given sea bass as the main ingredient and had to use their culinary skills while simultaneously completing the sailing course.
Once back in the marina, crews had to finish and plate their creations before presenting them to the jury.
Only two members of each crew were allowed into the designated plating area, where they had just five minutes to complete their dish and hand it over for judging.
The combination of sailing, cooking and strict time limits made for a very different type of competition, with crews required to demonstrate both nautical and gastronomic skills.
32 boats took part
The main race took place on Saturday, October 3, with activity beginning at the Port of Moraira in the morning.
The boats took part in a Dock Out Show before setting off from the marina, with the crews then facing the challenge of preparing their dishes during the race.
After returning to port, the competition moved to the Gourmet Race Village, where the finished dishes were plated and presented to the jury.
The event has established itself as one of Moraira’s most distinctive annual celebrations, bringing together the area’s strong links to the sea with its Mediterranean food culture.
Leading chefs judged the dishes
The competitors faced a particularly demanding panel of judges, headed by Alberto Ferruz, chef at BonAmb.
He was joined by a line-up of chefs and gastronomy experts including Emmanuelle Baron of Casa Pepa, Vicky Sevilla of Arrels, José Manuel Miguel of Beat, José Vicente Pérez of El Bressol, Pepa Navarro of El Cranc and César Marquiegui of L’Olleta.
The jury also included actor and gastronomy enthusiast Juan Echanove, gastronomic journalist Santos Ruiz, GastroUni’s Óscar Carrión and Sergio Terol, president of the Valencian Gastronomy Academy.
The event has previously attracted major names from the Spanish and international culinary world, helping to establish the Gourmet Race as an important date on Teulada-Moraira’s gastronomic calendar.
Gourmet Village welcomed visitors
The competition was accompanied by a programme of activities open to the public.
The Gourmet Race Village opened on Saturday lunchtime, giving visitors the opportunity to sample food and enjoy the atmosphere around the competition.
A showcooking was also held by Nazario Cano of Ritual de Terra, while the Grup d’Estudis Morairers presented the new Sabors de Moraira recipe book.
The weekend programme concluded with the presentation of the competition prizes, followed by lunch and an afternoon Tardeo Gourmet Race.
The event had officially begun on Friday with the presentation of the participating teams and a skippers’ meeting, followed by a welcome cocktail at Club Náutico Moraira.
A celebration of Moraira’s maritime identity
The Gourmet Race has developed into more than simply a sailing competition.
The event showcases several of the elements that define Teulada-Moraira, bringing together its maritime heritage, Mediterranean cuisine, tourism and local produce.
The 13th edition once again demonstrated why the competition has become such a distinctive part of the local calendar, attracting sailors, chefs, residents and visitors to Moraira.
With 32 crews battling it out on the water and some of the region’s leading culinary names judging their creations, last weekend’s Gourmet Race offered a very different take on competitive sailing, where getting back to port was only half the challenge.
