Community creativity, international sport and charity fundraising are bringing people together across the Costa Blanca and surrounding areas. Almoradi artisans are celebrating an important anniversary, Monover residents are transforming a public square through crochet, Torrevieja has welcomed bowlers from across Europe, and Benimar is preparing for a two-day music fundraiser for CD Thader.
Almoradi artisans celebrate fourth anniversary
Handmade crafts will take centre stage in Almoradi as local association Tribu Artesana celebrates its fourth anniversary with its first collective exhibition and a special gathering of artisans.
The exhibition opened at the Almoradi Town Hall Exhibition Hall on Thursday, October 1 at 8:00 PM and will remain open until October 12.
Visitors will be able to see work created by members of the association using a variety of techniques and materials, with the exhibition highlighting the fact that each piece is made entirely by hand.
The anniversary celebrations continue on Saturday, October 3 in Plaza de la Constitucion, where 20 artisans will display and sell their creations alongside Almoradi’s traditional weekly market.
A free workshop led by Beatriz Artesania en Vidrio will also give visitors the chance to create and decorate a clown.
The gathering is not a one-off event. Tribu Artesana has established a regular artisan market in the square on the first Saturday of every month, often accompanied by free workshops for the public.
Over four years, the initiative has created a permanent opportunity for local makers to showcase their work and meet customers directly.
International bowlers compete for Torrevieja titles
Torrevieja became a meeting point for bowlers from across Europe as its international bowling festival crowned champions after nine days of competition.
The XIV Torrevieja International Open and VI Torrevieja Senior Open brought hundreds of entries to the Costa Blanca, with players representing around 20 nationalities and the majority travelling from outside Spain.
There was British success too, as Great Britain’s Steven Flynn won the Senior Open, finishing ahead of Finland’s Erkki Koivuranta, while Cliff Drew took third place.
The main International Open concluded on Sunday, September 27, with Norway’s Kristoffer Berg Nilsen taking the title after the final round-robin stage. Sweden’s Stefan Dew finished second, Belgium’s Jonas Maes third and Finland’s Nooa Vilokkinen fourth.
Vilokkinen also received the award for the best under-23 bowler, adding another international name to the tournament’s honours.
The event was particularly significant for Club Eurobowling Torrevieja, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
More than 500 registrations were reported across the two competitions, underlining how the annual event has developed into an international fixture for the city.
Community crochet transforms Monover public square
Crochet is being used to bring neighbours together in Monover while giving one of the town’s public squares a colourful community makeover.
The Arquitectura Teixida project centres on Plaza Dona Carmela, where residents are creating textile pieces that will eventually become part of the square itself.
A group of women meet every Wednesday to crochet items that will be incorporated into seating areas, benches and features around trees, combining traditional craft with the redesign of a shared public space.
However, the project is not restricted to experienced crocheters. Anyone interested can join, with no previous crochet skills required.
Sessions take place each Wednesday from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, at both Plaza Dona Carmela and the Hogar del Pensionista.
Rather than simply just decorating the square, Arquitectura Teixida is designed to encourage neighbours to meet, work together and play a direct part in changing a space they share.
Once completed, the pieces produced will remain visible around the square, turning the work of local participants into part of the public environment and giving Plaza Dona Carmela a distinctly community-made identity.
