Runners tackle Alicante’s landmark castle climbs

More than 1,800 runners took to the streets of Alicante on Sunday, October 4, combining a gruelling sporting challenge with support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The 12th Carrera de los Castillos sent competitors racing through some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, with both 5K and 10K routes testing runners on the steep climbs around San Fernando and Santa Barbara castles.

More than 500 participants tackled the 5K, while over 1,300 bravely took on the longer route, which included both castle climbs before finishing on the track at Joaquin Villar athletics stadium.

Race raises more than €1,800 for APSA

The event also carried an important charitable purpose. One euro from every registration was allocated to APSA’s inclusive sports programme. The programme helps people with intellectual disabilities enjoy greater access to physical activity.

With more than 1,800 registered runners, that means the event generated more than €1,800 for the initiative through entry contributions.

Andre Macias wins challenging 10K race

Andre Macias won the men’s 10K in 33 minutes 40 seconds, while Monica Pascual claimed the women’s title in 37 minutes.

In the 5K, Mohamed Labjili crossed first in 16 minutes 3 seconds, with Caterina Peralta winning the women’s race in 19 minutes 1 second.

Music brings festival atmosphere to finish

Beyond the medals, the morning brought together sport, spectacular views and solidarity, turning one of Alicante’s toughest popular races into practical support for inclusive sport and the families APSA serves.

Music and a batucada added a festival atmosphere as runners reached home.
