Lidl is opening a new supermarket in Velez-Malaga on Thursday, October 29, bringing more shopping choice to the Axarquia town as the German discount chain continues expanding across Spain.

The new store is located at Calle Carrera de las Angustias, 58, and has a sales area of 1,550 square metres. Customers will also have access to almost 100 parking spaces, including three electric vehicle charging points. Opening hours will be Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 9.30pm.

Lidl invests more than €30 million in October openings

The Velez-Malaga branch is one of five new Lidl supermarkets scheduled to open across Spain during October. The company has announced a combined investment of more than €30 million in the five stores, with over 100 permanent jobs expected to be created between them.

Lidl has not specified how many of those jobs will be based at the new Axarquia supermarket. The opening forms part of a wider expansion programme for the retailer, which plans to invest more than €440 million in Spain during its 2026 financial year, running from March 2026 to February 2027. The company expects to open around 50 new supermarkets nationally during that period, while also investing in extensions and improvements to existing stores.

The middle aisle is part of the attraction

Lidl’s rotating non-food section has developed a following of its own. Depending on the week, shoppers might find gardening equipment, power tools, clothing, kitchen gadgets or seasonal goods among the groceries. The appeal is sufficiently well known to feature in recent British supermarket comparisons.

The business traces its roots to a German wholesale operation dating back to 1930, but the first modern Lidl discount shop opened in Ludwigshafen in 1973. The Lidl name comes from the surname of a former business associate, Ludwig Lidl. According to the commonly reported origin story, company owner Dieter Schwarz could not use the name Schwarz for his discount shops for legal reasons, so he bought the rights to use Lidl’s name for 1,000 German marks.

More shopping options for Axarquia residents

The new supermarket will give residents in Velez-Malaga another option for their weekly shopping, with dedicated parking and charging facilities for electric cars. Lidl has continued to expand its Spanish network as competition between supermarket chains remains strong, with shoppers looking for ways to manage household food bills.

The company sells its own-brand groceries together with selected branded products, fresh produce, bakery goods and non-food special offers. Further details about recruitment at the Velez-Malaga branch, including the number of local vacancies, have not been confirmed in the information available.

The opening date is Thursday, October 29, with the store due to operate six days a week.
