Manilva is getting three new taxis, changing daily life for residents who struggle to get around

A trip to the doctor, a little visit to friends, popping to the shop or a coffee out can feel like a major effort if stepping into an ordinary car is difficult. Maybe not for long. Help is on the way, as two of the new licences for taxis are for vehicles adapted for passengers with reduced mobility.

What is on offer for taxi drivers

Manilva town hall has published the rules for awarding three new taxi licences for the area. All drivers can apply, but must have at least five years experience as a taxi driver in the town. The town hall will then choose the winners through a selection process known in Spanish as a concurso. The licences are for:

One adapted nine-seater
One adapted seven-seater
One standard seven-seater, without adaptation

Why Manilva is adding taxis

Town hall officials say the extra licences answer the needs of the local areas as a whole, as well as needs raised by the associations Luisana and Afesol and by Fundacion Aprona (the Aprona Foundation). All three are respected local organisations that support people with reduced mobility.

More changes coming to Manilva

Taxis are not the only change on the horizon. As EWN reported earlier this month, council technicians are studying a proposal for an underground car park with more than 600 spaces in the Corredor Verde, and plans for a splash park in Plaza de la Amistad, near Martin Carpena, with water games aimed at small children during the hot summer months.

Sports fans have news too. Manilva is planning a new seven-a-side football pitch at the sports complex, including 120 underground parking spaces, with a budget of more than €2 million.
