One last coffee, a leisurely breakfast and time to pack: the final morning of a break should not feel like a race through someone else’s to-do list. Airbnb’s latest changes could make leaving your holiday rental a little less stressful.
Airbnb has announced restrictions on demanding cleaning tasks and instructions revealed only after a reservation is made. Its updated policy applies to bookings made on or after November 20, 2026, rather than every stay taking place after that date.
What has changed in Airbnb’s check-out rules?
Hosts will generally no longer be allowed to ask guests to strip beds, take rubbish off-site, or wash and put away dishes. Airbnb’s policy prohibits requests involving substantial time or effort, or tasks normally performed by a cleaner.
Calling this a complete ban on “taking the bins out” would be misleading. Removing rubbish from the property is covered by the restriction, but guests must still use designated receptacles and avoid leaving excessive waste behind.
House rules and requests must appear in the designated section of the listing when guests book. Hosts cannot introduce new ones afterwards through messages, signs inside the accommodation or conversations in person.
What does it mean for Airbnb hosts?
Hosts will need to check that their listings and departure instructions meet the requirements. Basic steps can remain: Airbnb allows hosts to require guests to lock up and provide key-return details, while reasonable requests to switch off lights are also permitted.
Cleaning fees are not being abolished. These cover standard work between reservations, including laundry and vacuuming. Hosts cannot charge guests fees for failing to perform specific cleaning or check-out tasks.
Local conditions may justify exceptions. Airbnb gives examples including shower-time limits linked to drought restrictions and using animal-proof rubbish containers where bears are present.
Hosts who breach the policy may receive warnings or be asked to update their listings. Continued violations could lead to a notice on the listing, reduced visibility in search results or further action under Airbnb’s terms.
What does it mean for Airbnb guests?
Holidaymakers should have a clearer picture of expectations before paying, rather than discovering additional demands after arrival. Airbnb distinguishes between house rules, which guests must follow, and requests, which they are encouraged to respect.
Guests must still leave by the agreed check-out time and avoid leaving accommodation needing excessive or deep cleaning. Reasonable reimbursement requests may apply for damage, missing items or unexpected cleaning costs for which they are responsible.
Travellers whose reservations fall under the new policy can report instructions that conflict with it directly to Airbnb. Reminder, it applies to bookings made on or after November 20, 2026, and not every stay taking place after that date.
