Poirot has been shown the door, the house guests are all behaving very suspiciously, and somebody has fired a gun. Fuengirola’s English-speaking theatre is serving up a proper Christie evening this November, and you will want a seat to find out whodunit.

A weekend in the country that goes horribly wrong

Agatha Christie first wrote The Hollow as a novel in 1946, then adapted it for the stage in 1951. She famously left Hercule Poirot out of the play, which puts the spotlight on the guests themselves. Family and friends gather at a country house, and a tangle of old flames, jealousies and secrets quickly turns the weekend dark. Then a shot is fired, and everyone becomes a suspect.

Lynn Halliday directs this production at Salon Varietes Theatre, billed as “a house full of secrets, a room full of suspects, a deadly weekend”. Bring your best theories, and perhaps a poker face.

Dates and times for your diary

The Hollow runs from Wednesday, November 4 to Sunday, November 8. Curtain-up is 7.30pm from Wednesday to Saturday, with an earlier 7pm start on Sunday. That leaves you five chances to catch it, whether you fancy a midweek treat or a cosy weekend night out.

Booking tips and accessibility

Tickets are sold through the Salon Varietes Theatre website. If online payment gives you trouble, wait half an hour for the seats to be released, then try again. The theatre also warns against buying from any other source, so you avoid scams.

The theatre is accessible to wheelchair users, but wheelchair-access tickets can only be bought from the box office. Children under five are not allowed in the auditorium, and every child needs their own seat and an accompanying adult.

Remembering Peter Mitchell

Regulars will also be thinking of Peter Mitchell, the much-loved director who passed away in July 2024. As Euro Weekly News reported, friends and colleagues filled the theatre group’s Facebook page with tributes. They praised his creativity, his encouragement and the opportunities he gave to actors.

Box office details

Pop in or call on (+34) 952 47 45 42, Monday to Friday between 11am and 2.30pm, or from one hour before each performance. You can also email boxoffice@salonvarietestheatre.com. The theatre is on Calle Emancipacion in Fuengirola, and its season runs from September to May.

So pick your prime suspect, and book early. Even the keenest armchair detectives may find themselves surprised.
