Warm roasted chestnuts, children laughing and neighbours chatting in the fresh autumn air, this is the idyllic scene coming back to Marbella this weekend. Nagueles Park will host a new edition of the Toston, the town’s traditional chestnut roast, on Sunday, November 1
What is the Toston?
Toston is the Andalucian name for a get-together built around roasted chestnuts. Towns across Malaga province hold one around All Saints’ Day, when friends and families meet outdoors to socialise, share the warm nuts and welcome the change of season.
Times and activities on during the day
Festivities start at 12.30pm with music, children’s entertainment and bouncy castles, so younger visitors will have plenty to keep them happy and busy for hours. Organisers have scheduled the traditional chestnut handout for the afternoon, between 4pm and 6pm, the ideal window to collect a portion and enjoy a late afternoon snack amongst the trees.
A drink that supports a good cause
A bar on site will donate its takings to the local Agrupacion de Cofradias de Marbella, the association of the town’s religious brotherhoods. These groups are best known for the Easter processions that fill Marbella’s streets each spring, so buying a drink is a really great way to back their work.
Who is behind the celebration?
Councillor for Festivities Yolanda Marin described the Toston as a festive day for enjoying autumn traditions with loved ones, and she praised the activities planned for children. She also thanked everyone who helped organise the event, with special mention for the water company Hidralia and the Environment and Parks and Gardens department.
Nagueles is one of Marbella’s gorgeous green spaces in the hills above town, the perfect setting for a Sunday afternoon out. Bring a light jacket and an appetite and head over, enjoy the music, chatter and chestnuts.
