Kind-hearted volunteers have collected dozens of kilogrammes of rubbish and other waste from Monte Fajardo in Cartagena as part of a community environmental clean-up initiative, with another event already planned for November 8 at nearby Monte Galeras.
Volunteers remove 35kg of rubbish from Monte Fajardo
The clean-up took place on Saturday, October 31, and saw participants work together to remove waste from the natural surroundings of Monte Fajardo. In total, volunteers collected 17 kilogrammes of lightweight packaging, another 17 kilogrammes of general waste and one kilogramme of paper and cardboard.
The clean-up also uncovered a considerable amount of smaller waste and items improperly discarded in the natural environment. Volunteers collected an astounding 132 wet wipes and 18 bags of animal faeces in the area.
Besides improving the condition of the natural surroundings, the initiative also helped gather information about the types of rubbish being left behind. Recording the different materials found allows organisers to build a clearer picture of the waste affecting local outdoor spaces.
Another free community clean-up planned at Monte Galeras on November 8
The environmental initiative will continue this Sunday, November 8, when the Kairós Women’s Association organises another volunteer clean-up, this time at Monte Galeras. The activity will run from 9:30am to 11:30am and is being supported by Cartagena City Council. Participation is free, giving residents an opportunity to contribute directly to the protection and preservation of the municipality’s natural surroundings.
Those interested in taking part can register or request further information by contacting the organisers through WhatsApp on T. 641 23 91 33.
Residents encouraged to help protect Cartagena’s natural spaces
The two clean-up activities highlight the importance of community involvement in keeping Cartagena’s natural areas free from rubbish and pollution. From discarded packaging and paper products to wet wipes and animal waste, the materials collected at Monte Fajardo demonstrate how everyday littering can affect the cleanliness and enjoyment of outdoor spaces.
With another opportunity to get involved at Monte Galeras, residents are being encouraged to join the initiative and help preserve the area’s natural environment for everyone to enjoy.
