SOURCE OF WEALTH: Alicante's sun and sea
FOURTEEN Valencian Community towns were designated “tourist municipalities” last year.
The region now has a total of 226 municipalities in this category, with the addition of Muchamiel, Relleu, Lliber and Artana bringing Alicante province’s tally up to 61.
The description is official recognition of the efforts made by town halls to maintain one of the Community’s principal sources of wealth, explained Sebastian Fernandez, regional director general for Tourism.
The designation also brings several advantages, starting with subsidies for town hall spending on maintenance, conservation and environmental protection. Co-finance is available for improving a tourist municipality’s public spaces as well all types of tourist services, while the towns also receive official promotional support.
