Worker killed in tractor tragedy

A MAN died when the tractor he was driving overturned, crushing him beneath the vehicle. The 79-year-old was working on a farm near San Vicente del Raspeig just after 10am on Sunday May 24 when the accident occurred. Emergency services attending the scene included firefighters who freed the victim but paramedics could not save his life.
Tractor accidents are a major cause of death in the agricultural sector. A 2011 study by the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) shows that most of these deaths involve workers being trapped under tractors. Although it became compulsory to fit cabins to tractors in 1979 to provide roll-over protection, fatalities continue as regulations are overlooked.
Those at greatest risk of farming accidents in Spain are over 65. And many accidents that result in serious injury remain unreported.
