YES to a new cycling lane, no to the removal of parking space. Such are the instructions of Pedregalejo residents who appear split between the joys of cycling safely and the necessity of parking during the busy summer months.
The admission by the local mobility councillor that a proposed new cycle lane through the east end of Malaga city might involve the removal of a few parking spots raised eyebrows among residents and local workers.
In fact the president of the neighbours association has flat out rejected the loss of even one space, so crucial are they in a city renowned for its parking difficulty. Owners of restaurants on the promenade have noted that even now that there is no cycle lane, they still have to cancel reservations due to a lack of parking facilities in the area.
An ominous sign of trouble to come was seen when business owners mused loudly that residents and hospitality workers may be forced to mount a public protest against any shrinking of parking space.
