ON TOP OF THE WORLD: Spain secure a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia
SPAIN comfortably beat Albania 3-0 in front of a 30,000 home crowd in Alicante’s Jose Rico Perez stadium to secure a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
First-half goals by Rodrigo, Isco and Alcantara saw the La Roja remain unbeaten in Group G of their World Cup qualifying games.
Barcelona defender and Cataluña independence supporter Gerard Pique was the target of whistles and jeers from the crowd.
Earlier in the week the 30-year-old had voted in the illegal referendum and then offered to quit the national team if his presence became a problem.
Pique left the pitch to a mixed reception when was replaced in the second half, having picked up a yellow card. He will have to serve a suspension and will not be not be available for the final group match against Israel on Monday.
