With a population of around 60 million people, Italy has more Covid-19 victims than China, a country with a population of two billion and 3,405 deaths.
Of those who have died, 87 per cent were over the age of 70, and the UN and Italian authorities suggest that the high number of fatalities in the Mediterranean country is due to its elderly population, which is the second oldest in the world.
A virologist at Germany’s Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Jonas Schmidtsaid the high volume of deaths could also be explained by an almost total breakdown of the health system in some areas of the country.
China yesterday reported no new local cases, attributed to an early lockdown with Wuhan and the Hubei province going into isolation in January.
Concerns across Europe and the Americas are that unless similar measures are taken, they may face death rates similar to that of Italy.
