In accordance with European Union preferences to move as much passenger traffic as possible onto railways, many companies are introducing new overnight sleeper routes.

A Belgian/Dutch Group European Sleeper will be launching its Brussels to Venice service which is expected to run twice a week from Wednesday February 5 and will take in no less than five countries.

The sleeper will pass though Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria before terminating in Italy and passengers will be able to book to and from nine different European cities Antwerp, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Cologne, Munich, Innsbruck and Verona, plus of course Brussels and Venice.

This is not planned to be anything more than a short term operation this year, probably ceasing to run after the end of March but it is considered an ideal opportunity for skiers in particular to enjoy winter breaks.

It will also be ideal for those wanting to take normal city breaks and will be a perfect option for those who want to attend the Venice Carnival which runs from February 22 to March 4 but the journey time if you travel all of the way will be in the region of 15 hours.

Tickets for the whole journey will cost from €119 to €239 one way depending on the accommodation required and reservations have to be made in advance in the knowledge that you may have to share some cabins.

“We are pleased to introduce this new night train connection from the North Sea to the Mediterranean,

“Passengers will be able to board our train from Belgium and the Netherlands, and relax in the comfort of the restaurant car, while the train transports them through Germany and Austria, and across the Alps, ending in the historic cities of Verona and Venice the following day.

“This marks a new important milestone for European Sleeper and the convenience of night travel across Europe more sustainably” commented Chris Engelsman, co-founder of European Sleeper.
