Musk’s Starlink to beam mobile signal straight into your pocket. Starlink broadband is live here – but satellite texting and calls on Spanish phones must wait… for now. Discover the full list of phones compatible with Starlink’s new satellite texting service. Find out if your device is supported, when it’s launching, and why Spain is still waiting for Elon Musk’s space signal.

What’s already live in Spain

Starlink’s satellite broadband has covered homes and businesses in Spain since 2022, especially in rural and remote areas. But the new “Direct-to-Cell” service that lets your ordinary mobile send texts and calls via satellite isn’t available here yet.

Where the service is already blasting off

In the US, T-Mobile launches “T‑Satellite” on July 23, bringing basic mobile coverage directly from space. New Zealand already offers this feature commercially. Europe’s first stop will be Ukraine, with satellite texting by late 2025 and voice/data due in 2026. Spain hasn’t been included in these rollouts – yet.

So, why is Spain still sidelined for now?

Several hurdles remain:

  • No deal has been signed yet between SpaceX and Spanish networks like Telefónica or Vodafone.
  • Each country must clear regulatory approval and secure spectrum licences.
  • Starlink continues to build out its Direct-to-Cell satellite network, with further launches and partnerships due through 2025–26.

What to know in Spain

If you’re in Spain and wondering what Starlink services are currently available, here’s what you need to know. Starlink home broadband is fully operational across Spain, having launched in 2022. It provides high-speed satellite internet access, particularly useful in rural or remote areas. However, Starlink’s new direct-to-mobile texting service is not yet available in Spain. This feature, which allows users to send text messages via satellite without mobile coverage, is currently live in the United States and New Zealand, with Ukraine set to join by the end of 2025. Additionally, voice calls and satellite mobile data through Starlink are also not yet available in Spain, as the global rollout of these features is expected to continue into 2026. While Spain enjoys full access to satellite broadband, mobile users will need to wait a bit longer for Elon Musk’s space-powered mobile coverage.

Takeaway

Yes, Starlink’s internet dishes are already spinning above Spain. But satellite texting and calling from your everyday phone? Spain’s not part of the party yet. The US and New Zealand are first upand even Europe’s first, Ukraine, doesn’t go live until late 2025.

When that tech arrives here, it’ll change the game for hikers, holiday homes and anyone off-grid. Until then, your phone still needs 4G or 5G to stay connected. But keep looking skywards – Spain’s turn could be just around the corner.

I live in the middle of nowhere so opted for Starlink home broadband when it was launched. Monthly costs have dropped to just 40 euros a month for download speeds approaching 300Mbps which for me is amazing at that cost. I look forward to see How the mobile service pans out.
