La Cala Lions Club was celebrated for its remarkable charitable work and received the Joan Hunt Award in the Charity category during the fourth year of the awards ceremony held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Edgar Neville Auditorium in Malaga.

Organised by the Malaga Provincial Council and the Cudeca Foundation, the event recognised the contributions of foreign residents to the province.

Mijas Mayor Ana Mata presented the award, calling it “extremely well-deserved” and praising the club’s 46-year legacy of collaboration with the local government. “This group of over 30 members carries out daily charitable actions to support essential projects in our municipality,” Mata stated, stressing the club’s integral role in the community.

Club president David Kay expressed the group’s gratitude, describing the recognition as “fantastic” and highlighting the organisation’s achievement of raising over €1.5 million for charitable causes. The club, largely composed of foreign residents who have made the Costa del Sol their home, has dedicated 26 years to aiding vulnerable families, children with medical needs, schools, animal shelters, and homeless individuals, while also contributing to international emergencies through Lions International.

The Joan Hunt Awards, inspired by the legacy of Cudeca founder Joan Hunt for her work in palliative care, also honoured seven other recipients.

Marisa Martín, Cudeca’s manager, described the gala as “inspiring”, noting how awardees contribute to a “more just and supportive Malaga Province”. Francisco Salado, president of the Malaga Provincial Council, commended the club’s efforts in supporting both foreign residents and those at risk of social exclusion.

Well done and well deserved, La Cala Lions!
