The inaugural Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women’s Championships presented by Ecotrans Group (WTA 125) came to an end in Santa Ponça on Sunday October 12, following a day marked by dramatic weather changes. Heavy morning rain and fierce gusts of wind delayed proceedings, but by the afternoon, bright sunshine returned to the Mallorca Country Club, setting the stage for a thrilling final.

Amazing performance

Argentina’s Solana Sierra, the tournament’s top seed and world No. 86, claimed the title after defeating Serbia’s Lola Radivojevic (No. 173) 6–3, 6–1 in a dominant performance. The match was briefly halted in the opening set when Sierra led 4–2 (30–15), as rain forced players off court. Play resumed at 3:00 p.m. under clear skies, with an enthusiastic crowd that included a strong contingent of Argentine supporters rallying behind their compatriot.

Once play restarted, Sierra displayed a commanding all-court game, anchored by a powerful backhand, aggressive returns, and a consistent first serve. Dictating the tempo from the baseline, she controlled the match throughout, leaving Radivojevic struggling to counter her precision and intensity. Despite the scoreline, Radivojevic’s run to the final capped a strong week for the 19-year-old Serbian, who impressed with her resilience and composure throughout the tournament.

Victory for Sierra

Sierra’s victory was celebrated with an emotional trophy ceremony on Centre Court. The champion received her trophy from Argentine legend and tournament ambassador Gabriela Sabatini, alongside Marco Taboas, Managing Director of the Fundació Turisme Responsable de Mallorca. Radivojevic was presented with her runner-up award by Edwin Weindorfer, CEO of e|motion group, and Javier Tascón, Deputy Mayor of Calvià.

Visibly moved, Sierra thanked her team and reflected on the significance of the win:

“I’ve had a few tough weeks, so I want to thank my team for always being here for me. I’ve really enjoyed this tournament – having Gabriela here has been a great source of inspiration,” she said.

The championship marks a successful debut for the event, which has been praised for its organisation, atmosphere, and setting. With world-class facilities and strong fan engagement, the Mallorca Country Club and the municipality of Calvià have further established themselves as leading destinations for international women’s tennis.

The Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Women’s Championships joins the island’s growing calendar of elite sporting events, underscoring Mallorca’s reputation as a premier venue for both professional and grassroots tennis. As the first edition comes to a close, organisers, players, and fans alike hailed the tournament as a resounding success – one that promises to become a fixture on the WTA circuit for years to come.
