A resident of Javea has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the costs of intensive cancer treatment needed by his 12-year-old son, Roman, after the boy was diagnosed with a rare malignant tumour last September.

Philip Burchell’s son was diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma, an uncommon and aggressive cancer of the salivary glands. Following weeks of tests and frequent hospital visits, Roman underwent surgery in November at San Juan Hospital in Alicante, where doctors successfully removed the tumour.

Proton therapy crucial to prevent relapse

However, concerns over a possible recurrence led to his transfer in January to La Fe Hospital in Valencia. After further examinations and a multidisciplinary medical review involving oncologists, radiologists and maxillofacial specialists, doctors confirmed there were no remaining signs of cancer. Despite the positive news, Roman still requires proton therapy in Madrid to significantly reduce the risk of the cancer returning.

The specialised treatment is expected to last between six and seven weeks. While the therapy itself is considered essential, the associated costs — including accommodation, travel and day-to-day living expenses for the family during their stay in Madrid — are beyond the family’s financial means.

Community support driving crowdfunding appeal

To help meet these costs, the family launched a crowdfunding appeal with a target of €12,000. So far, nearly €8,770 has been raised through more than 100 donations, highlighting the strong community support surrounding the case.

Mr Burchell said the diagnosis had been “every parent’s worst nightmare”, adding that the family had been left “devastated, with many questions and very few answers” when doctors described the cancer as “a very rare type”.

Unused funds to support local charity

Organisers of the campaign have confirmed that any funds not used will be donated to the local cancer support charity Cancer Care Javea. They are also encouraging people to share the appeal to help it reach more potential donors.

The family say any support, no matter how small, is deeply appreciated as they prepare for the coming weeks of treatment in Madrid.
