Five people have died and one person remains missing after a wooden footbridge collapsed along a coastal path at El Bocal beach in Santander, northern Spain, sending a group of walkers, reportedly including a teacher and several pupils, plunging onto rocks and into the sea below. Watch videos below.
The accident happened on Tuesday March 3 at around 4.30pm when the structure suddenly gave way while seven people were crossing it. All seven fell several metres onto the rocky shoreline and water beneath the walkway.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after witnesses raised the alarm, launching a large-scale rescue operation involving firefighters, police and coastguard teams. One person was pulled from the water alive, but five others died following the fall. Another person remains unaccounted for as search efforts continue.
Authorities confirmed that one of the victims was initially rescued and taken to hospital in critical condition but later died from severe injuries, bringing the death toll to five. Officials have not yet formally confirmed the identities of those involved, though Spanish media reports indicate the group included a teacher and several pupils who were in the area at the time of the collapse.

Coastal walkway collapses without warning
The wooden bridge formed part of a popular coastal path linking El Bocal beach with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography on the outskirts of Santander. The route is frequently used by walkers exploring the rugged coastline in northern Spain.
Officials say the structure collapsed suddenly while the group was crossing it, although the exact cause has not yet been determined. Investigators are now examining the remains of the walkway to establish what led to the failure.
Initial reports indicate that the bridge was part of a network of elevated wooden walkways installed more than a decade ago along the coastal cliffs. The paths were designed to give visitors access to scenic areas of the shoreline while protecting the surrounding environment.
Local authorities have closed the area while rescue teams continue searching for the missing person and investigators examine the site. The collapse has shocked residents and visitors in the region, which is known for its dramatic coastline and hiking routes.
Around 70 emergency responders were involved in the operation as crews worked along the rocky coast and in the water below the collapsed structure. Helicopters and specialist rescue teams were also deployed as part of the search effort.
The tragedy has prompted renewed questions about the safety and maintenance of aging coastal infrastructure. Officials have said a full investigation will determine whether structural problems, weather conditions or other factors contributed to the disaster.
Search operations continued into the evening as teams worked in difficult terrain along the shoreline to locate the missing person and recover victims from the area beneath the collapsed bridge.
