Haval Jolion Pro – sensible, well-equipped, value motoring

We’re used to completely new marques being launched, usually Chinese, but there is one Chinese manufacturer that started over 40 years ago. Great Wall Motors are not a well-known name even today, they have principally manufactured pick-up trucks. One of their most interesting cars is the Haval Jolion Pro. Quite a name!
The first interesting fact about the Haval is that I have not found a single good review about the car, most have slated it as one of the worst cars they have ever driven. I am puzzled as to why because having spent a week behind the wheel of the Jolion Pro, while it has its flaws, it’s actually a very likeable, comfortable and affordable car.
Prices start at €27,561/£23,995 rising to just under €35,000/£30,000 with three models all powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine boosted by a 110kw electric motor for a combined 189PS. Three trim levels – Premium, Lux and Ultra – offer excellent levels of standard equipment which as a minimum include CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and exit, rear view camera, rear parking sensors and a very clever idea, a USB point for your dash cam.
On the road the Jolion has a decent amount of power and acceleration although using your right foot too enthusiastically highlights the limits of the transmission. It’s a bit lethargic, and vocal, as the gearbox catches up with the engine’s need for power. It may not offer a sporting ride but the Jolion is a comfortable one that soaks up the bumps rather well.
Build quality appears impressively good given the Haval’s pricing and although the lead-in Premium model would, in my view, offer the best value, the top models provide highly impressive levels of standard equipment. Fuel economy seems good and providing you are looking for a longer term purchase the effects of depreciation should be minimised. The dealer network is expanding but for the moment is not expansive so that may be an issue for some in less populated areas.
Why then does the Haval receive such negative reviews? Many potential buyers want affordable, comfortable and well-equipped transport. Therefore handling, premium badging and image are not uppermost in their purchasing decisions. Perhaps some reviewers don’t get it that not all motorists are petrolheads.
Whatever the answer the Haval Jolion Pro deserves to be given a fair hearing and it may then find a deserved wider audience.
