Exciting news for residents in the Los Pacos area of Fuengirola as they are soon to benefit from a major transformation of the old Parque de la Cantera, after the town hall officially awarded the contract for the first phase of its ambitious ‘Montaña del Deporte’ (Sports Mountain) project.
Phase one will focus on two main key improvements, the renovation of Calle Flor de Loto, the street adjacent to the park, and the creation of a new car park with capacity for 56 vehicles, a practical addition that will be welcomed by anyone familiar with parking issues in the area at weekends.
The project includes three dedicated activity zones
Further phases will see the site transformed into a new full sporting and leisure destination, with three dedicated activity zones planned. These will include an interactive goal, multi-use courts, a climbing wall, calisthenics equipment, children’s play areas, and outdoor fitness stations. For the more relaxed, there will be shaded rest areas, picnic zones, and family-friendly walking spaces are also included in the design.
The announcement was made on April 20 by Mayor Ana Mula alongside Councillor for Strategic Infrastructure Rocio Arriaga. Following a competitive tender process that opened on January 23, construction firm Maracof S.L. was selected from seven applicants to carry out the work.
The company’s winning bid came in at €891,516.41, approximately €100,000 below the original budget estimate. Maracof has also committed to completing the works within 110 days, which is 39 days fewer than the maximum period set out in the contract conditions.
The project has been in development since 2022, when the town hall launched a public ideas competition that attracted eight proposals. The winning design was chosen for its innovative approach to the 27,000-square-metre site, an area the council intends to make full use of across all phases of the project.
Start limbering up and stretching as work on phase one is expected to begin within the coming weeks.
