The Alicante City Council has expanded the reach of the Alicante Moves (Alicante se mueve) app, which aims to facilitate travel within the city by providing real-time traffic updates for users. The app is now available for Apple users.

A new resource for Apple users in Alicante

To be specific, the Alicante Moves app and its corresponding website allow its users to check the exact arrival time of city buses at each stop, find available parking spaces in public parking garages, and plan routes based on traffic conditions and any potential disruptions. The app has been especially useful for residents and visitors ahead of peak season, looking to use public transport on weekends and holidays.

Adding to the ease of transportation and scheduling, the app also provides specific information on traffic conditions, incidents, available parking spaces, traffic cameras, bus stops and bus arrival times, air quality monitoring at environmental stations, and any events or disruptions that may affect mobility.

How the app works

The digital platform draws information from the traffic surveillance system in the Alicante area, which consists of more than 300 cameras installed on main roads, including licence plate readers and image devices. Around 60 of these cameras provide accurate images of main routes and intersections, allowing for a by-the-minute update of conditions on the road.

Parking lots are also monitored through the platform through Alicante’s municipal computer systems. These show the number of available spaces in the lots, as well as with the urban bus transport operator to offer the remaining time for the arrival of buses at each stop.

A landmark initiative for transport in the big city

The app is available to all residents and visitors through a web browser, at the website movilidad.alicante.es. It can also be downloaded on Android devices as well as iOS for iPhones.

It is the first app to be developed by the Alicante City Council, representing a feat in mobility in Spain and also represents a landmark initiative as a citizen access app.
