Joint pain: Non-Surgical regenerative treatment attracts European patients to Marbella

For many people living on the Costa del Sol, joint pain has become an accepted part of daily life. Knee pain that makes the stairs a challenge. A shoulder that has been stiffening for months. A back that has not been right since a herniated disc diagnosis two years ago. And in many cases, the advice received from a GP, a specialist, or a scan result has been some version of the same thing: you may need surgery.

At CellOrtho, a regenerative orthopaedic clinic based in Nueva Andalucía, Marbella, we see a different picture. A growing proportion of patients arriving at our clinic, many of them flying in from the UK, Sweden, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands, are people who have been told that surgery is their only remaining option. For a significant number of them, it is not.

What is PRP treatment and how does it work?

PRP treatment, short for Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, uses the patient’s own biology to support the body’s natural repair processes, reduce inflammation and relieve pain without surgery. A small blood sample is taken from the patient, processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and injected into the affected joint or tendon. Because it is derived entirely from the patient’s own blood, the risk of adverse reaction is extremely low.

At CellOrtho we also offer cell-free signalling therapy and cellular therapy, progressively advanced orthobiologic treatments for cases requiring a higher level of regenerative support.

“PRP is one of the most clinically studied orthobiologic treatments available,” explains Dr. Arvin Yarollahi, orthopaedic and sports medicine specialist and founder of CellOrtho. “The evidence for its use in knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff conditions, tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis is well established and continues to grow. For many patients, it offers a genuine alternative to surgery or repeated cortisone injections.”

Why cortisone is not a long-term solution

Cortisone injections remain one of the most commonly administered treatments for joint pain across Europe. They work quickly and pain can reduce significantly within days, but the benefit is temporary. Cortisone suppresses inflammation without addressing the underlying tissue degeneration driving it. For chronic conditions like tennis elbow or knee osteoarthritis, multiple clinical trials have shown that patients treated with PRP achieve significantly better outcomes at 12 months than those treated with cortisone.

“We regularly treat patients who have had three, four, sometimes five cortisone injections over the years,” says Dr. Yarollahi. “Each one provided less relief than the last. PRP works differently. It stimulates the body’s own repair mechanism rather than masking the problem.”

Who comes to CellOrtho and why

CellOrtho treats patients from across Europe for a wide range of orthopaedic conditions including knee pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, back pain, elbow conditions and more. Many are long-term residents on the Costa del Sol. Others fly in specifically for treatment, combining their visit with a few days on the coast.

The clinic offers a free video consultation with Dr. Yarollahi before any patient commits to travelling or to treatment, an honest assessment of whether regenerative treatment is likely to help before any commitment is made.

“If I do not think I can help someone, I will tell them that before they travel,” says Dr. Yarollahi. “That is how this clinic was built.”

CellOrtho is located at Skin Medical Clinic, Av. Rotary Internacional 5, Nueva Andalucía, Marbella. Free video consultations are available at www.cellortho.com
