Anyone in the Mojácar area, whether a long-time resident, a frequent visitor or a traveller passing through, must try Calima, a Moroccan-Mediterranean tucked away in Plaza Arbollon.
Calima, a great restaurant tucked away in Plaza Arbollon
The white-washed building of Calima blends into its surroundings, not necessarily standing out on looks alone. But once you approach, you’ll get the faintest whiff of a rich, addictive fragrance emanating from the place. Like magic, it’ll draw you in.
Dine inside, where the eggshell white walls and simple accents create a cosy atmosphere, or out in a spacious seating area that overlooks the plaza, close enough to enjoy the square’s sociable ambience but not distract from the dining experience.
Morrocan-Mediterranean flavours on display
Calima’s menu stands out against the rest of Mojácar’s gastronomic scene. Few other restaurants in the area offer Arab food, especially not to such a high standard. Some classic Spanish tapas are featured on the men; Flaming Calamari, Pil-Pil Prawns and Spicy Patata Bravas are all served sizzling hot, Calima’s unique stamp evident in each dish.
However, the menu’s real strong point is its perfectly balanced Moroccan flavours. There are five different Tagine dishes available and each one is a must-try. Served in a traditional Maghrebi pot, lift the lid and be wowed by the bright colours and bold fragrances. There’s a certain level of effortless showmanship that comes with being served such beautifully presented food.
What’s more, the food tastes just as good, if not better than it looks. It’s clear when eating that the ingredients haven’t just been thrown together, they’ve been infused to work together in perfect harmony.
There’s no question that dessert at Calima is a must, whether you have room left or not. The menu is small, only four items, but it will still be a tough decision.
Must visit Calima
While Calima is on the pricier side – €14 for the cheapest Tagine dish, €18 for the most expensive – it is well worth the cost. Bold flavours, bright colours and addictive flavours, made even more enjoyable by the five-star service. Calima is a must-try. Once you go once, you’ll be desperate to return.
