Orihuela neighbours and visitors will finally be able to enjoy the town’s barbecue area, located in the San Isidro neighbourhood next to the Hermitage of San Isidro. The restoration and improvement works of the barbecue area have been completed by the Orihuela Town Hall, and the community space will now be safer, more accessible, more functional, and of course, more fun for the residents.
A long-awaited change that the residents of Orihuela can enjoy
The regeneration works were heavily requested by the residents of the municipality, due to accumulated deterioration after years of continuous use. The barbecue area has long been a significant space for the residents of San Isidro, serving not only as a place where locals can go to prepare food, but also as a place to meet, hold neighbourly gatherings, and socialise.
What has changed in San Isidro’s popular barbecue area?
To be specific, the work involved the comprehensive repair of the built-in barbecues, including cleaning work, replacement of damaged parts, repairs to their exteriors, and improvements to the overall structures.
The area’s tables have also been replaced completely by new construction tables that are more resistant to the elements and less vulnerable to vandalism. New street furniture and waste bins have been added as well.
The area surrounding the barbecue space has also been improved, both in functionality and aesthetics. Old flowerbeds and uneven surfaces that made it difficult for people to reach the area have also been corrected. New paving has been installed instead, both improving accessibility and comfort for those gathering in the area. In its surroundings, old benches and railings have also been replaced or corrected.
The importance of neighbour meeting spaces in the municipality
The project has been called a “much-needed intervention” by Orihuela officials, emphasising the importance of these kinds of public gathering spaces where residents and visitors can enjoy and socialise together. Officials stated that the area was used practically every day by residents.
The San Isidro neighbourhood is one of the most important areas of Orihuela, located at the foot of the Sierra de Orihuela and surrounded by beautiful and historically significant murals.
