The Mummy 4 is officially confirmed to be going ahead with a 2028 release. This will bring the beloved Brendan Fraser-led franchise back for modern audiences, and hopefully right the wrongs of the failed Tom Cruise-led reboot in 2017.
The Scorpion King franchise was a spinoff of The Mummy Returns and expanded the lore of the universe further. Dwayne Johnson has expressed an interest in revitalising the series, and could do so off the back of The Mummy 4.
The Mummy 4 could be a huge cinematic event
There’s already a lot of hype around The Mummy 4, with viewers having had to wait more than 16 years since The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released in 2008. The fourth offering was originally supposed to happen soon after the third, but various factors prevented this.
Still, the classic series lives on in today’s entertainment market in different ways. There are online casino games that use the franchise’s branding, including The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra. Along with preserving the legacy of the movies, the game explores some other facets of the mythology.
There was also the 2017 The Mummy reboot, which was supposed to be the start of a new shared universe for Universal. This flopped at the box office, and the company scrapped the idea; however, leading to louder calls for Fraser to return and bring some fun back into the franchise. That’s why the 2028 offering could be a huge cinematic event, as it will be a blockbuster comeback for the 57-year-old who initially became a global star thanks to The Mummy in 1999.
Perfect time to release the Scorpion King reboot
There has been talk of a Scorpion King reboot since 2020, with Johnson eager to reimagine it with a completely new look. It’s unclear as to whether the star of the original picture will be returning to the role, but he will be heavily involved with his production company. The idea is to resurrect the Scorpion King in the present day, allowing for new storylines to be explored.
The Scorpion King was nowhere near as successful as The Mummy or The Mummy Returns at the box office, but it did make some modest returns. This may have been thanks to its swift release a year after the film it spun off from. If Johnson decides to release the Scorpion King reboot, it makes sense for him to use the same strategy. After The Mummy 4 hits cinemas, the new Scorpion King remake could piggyback on the hype from that.
There’s a lot riding on these two upcoming reboots. If they can recapture the magic of the films from over a decade ago, they will be able to attract a whole new generation of fans. Both franchises could lead to future sequels and spinoffs, and they could take advantage of the streaming market that didn’t exist back when they were first released. There’s still a lot of interest in Ancient Egypt, so these films
