Local officers of the Guardia Civil have celebrated the astonishing 182nd anniversary of the founding of the law enforcement agency in Torre Pacheco. The ceremony, which took place on the morning of Monday, May 17, served as a symbolic renewal of the officers’ commitment to serving society, as well as a decoration and recognition of Guardia Civil officers who serve or have served in the Region of Murcia.

A ceremony to celebrate the hardworking officials of Murcia and beyond

The ceremony was presided over by the commanding colonel of the 5th Zone, Francisco Pulido, as well as the Government Delegate in the Region of Murcia, Francisco Lucas. It was attended by other civil and military authorities. During the event, the Founding Decree of the Guardia Civil, dating back to May of 1844, was read aloud, and tributes were paid to the officers. Additionally, more than twenty decorations were awarded, including the Order of Merit of the Guardia Civil.

A dozen Guardia Civil officers who have recently retired or entered reserved status have been honoured with a diploma for their service.

This event marks the reaffirmation of the values and principles on which the institution was founded, and celebrates and expresses gratitude towards the members of the law enforcement agency that have helped to make the Region of Murcia a safer place for both locals and visitors.

Nearly two centuries of service to the people of Spain

Today, 182 years after its original founding, the Guardia Civil is present throughout all of Spain. Boasting more than 78,000 officers divided among 2,000 barracks and posts, the Guardia Civil is one of the principal law enforcement institutions in the country. The institution is also deployed in different international missions.

In addition to protecting the law and guaranteeing the free exercise of rights and freedoms by the people of Spain, the Guardia Civil also carries out rescue and assistance services, including mountain and territorial water rescue and any other actions that lead to the relief, aid, and protection of the public.
