What’s the best breakfast in Spain? Thanks to Nutella España, that question has been asked and answered, and a beloved Almería treat has proudly made the list.
As part of its newest “Buenos Días” marketing campaign, the famous chocolate spread brand shared a collection of traditional breakfast recipes from across Spain on social media and its website. The campaign celebrates regional flavours from different communities while adding Nutella’s signature twist to classic dishes.
Among the standout recipes was the Andalucían choice: the famous “chinitos” from Almería. These soft brioche-style buns are filled with a rich cream, covered in chocolate glaze, and finished with Nutella. Over the years, they have become one of the city’s most recognisable sweet treats and a favourite breakfast option for locals.
What are chinitos?
For anyone unfamiliar with chinitos, they are a classic pastry commonly found in bakeries across Almería province. Their fluffy texture, creamy filling, and chocolate topping have made them especially popular as a morning indulgence alongside coffee. Nutella’s version keeps the traditional essence of the pastry while adding its well-known hazelnut spread to the decoration and filling.
The campaign also continues Nutella’s growing connection with Almería. In 2023, special edition Nutella jars featured images of local landmarks including Los Cocedores beach and the Arrecife de las Sirenas. Now, the brand has once again placed the province in the national spotlight through its breakfast campaign.
Traditional Spanish breakfasts featured by Nutella
A total of fifteen regional recipes were included in the campaign, showcasing the diversity of Spanish breakfast culture. Alongside Almería’s chinitos were several other iconic treats from around the country.
Among them were xuixos from Girona, ensaimadas from the Balearic Islands, trenza del reyno from Pamplona, and the famous tarta de Santiago from Santiago de Compostela. The campaign also featured porras from Madrid, talos from the Basque Country, and fixuelos from Asturias.
Where to try Chinitos in Almería
For anyone visiting Almería, trying a chinito is almost essential. Many traditional bakeries and cafés across the city serve them fresh each morning, making them a popular choice for breakfast or an afternoon sweet treat.
Those wanting to recreate the pastry at home can also find Nutella’s full recipe online through the campaign website. According to the campaign, the chinito recipe takes around two hours to prepare and includes three stages: making the brioche dough, preparing the cream filling, and adding the chocolate coating.
With Spain’s regional breakfasts gaining more international attention, Almería’s famous chinito is now receiving recognition far beyond Andalucía.
