Mijas is hosting a fun charity women’s 7-a-side football tournament on Saturday, June 6 at the Las Lagunas Sports Centre. Running from 10am to 8pm, all proceeds from the event will go directly to Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Mijas to support vulnerable residents in the area.

The day has been organised by local authorities and Club Deportivo Las Lagunas, and hopes to promote women’s sport and raise important funds and resources for families experiencing financial hardship.

Pathway for women’s football

The tournament will be split into 3 age categories – infantil, cadete, and juvenil/senior. In the Spanish youth-sport system, infantil teams typically include children aged around 12 to13, cadete covers approximately 14 to 15, and juvenil includes older teenagers up to 18.

The senior category allows adult women to participate along with the oldest youth players. This structure means a nice broad range of players to take part, hopefully encouraging long-term interest and progression through the region’s women’s football pathway.

Essential support for Red Cross Mijas

Vital funds raised during the event will support the work of the Red Cross. The organisation provides essential assistance to residents experiencing hardship, including food support, emergency aid, help for older people living alone, and targeted programmes for families facing financial difficulties. It also runs programmes focused on social inclusion, health promotion, and support for individuals affected by unemployment or isolation.

The Red Cross food bank in Mijas currently supports around 300 families daily, with dozens more on the waiting list. Entry to the tournament is set at a €3 donation for spectators, and all participating teams will contribute non-perishable food items, to further donate to the event’s charitable purpose.

Sport and solidarity

Local authorities are excited about the event, noting it’s a brilliant way to put women’s football on the map in Mijas and at the same time bringing neighbours together for a fantastic cause.
