Mijas Town Hall has confirmed the fantastic full programme for this year’s Feria de Las Lagunas, running from Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28. Festivities councillor Silvia Marin revealed two headline changes when presenting the schedule, the return of horses on the streets and a new venue for the daytime fair.
Riders return after a decade away
Saturday June 27 brings back an organised horseback procession for the first time in over ten years. Mijas Council’s Livestock department is teaming up with the Peña Caballista riding club to bring horses back into the celebrations, riders will set off at noon from Camino de Campanales. Their route takes in Emilio Prado, Goya and Velazquez streets, plus Miguel Hernandez and Maria Zambrano avenues, finishing at Cortijo Don Elias, with several stops planned along the way.
Eloy Belmonte, who runs the Livestock department, has pointed out that plenty of horses taking part already live in Mijas, even though neighbouring towns give them more visibility in their own fairs. Officials see this first outing as a starting point for bringing horses back into other local celebrations too, including the Feria de Mijas Pueblo.
Daytime fair switches venue
Avenida Miguel Hernandez will not host the daytime fair this year. Cortijo Don Elias takes over the role instead, a switch Town Hall says will improve the experience for fairgoers and ease disruption for nearby residents. The fair opens at 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
Five nights of live music
Music can be enjoyed across the entire festival with a different headline act each evening, all completely free of charge.
Wednesday, June 24 – Lorenzo Molina opens the concert run shortly after the lighting ceremony.
Thursday, June 25 – Isabel Guerrero’s flamenco show, followed by the Noche Flamenca with Farruquito, Rancapino Chico and Jesús Méndez at 11pm.
Friday, June 26 – D’Locos perform, with Seguridad Social taking the stage around midnight.
Saturday, June 27 – Los Barrieros del Sur play, followed by Andy.
Sunday, June 28 – Salma at 10pm, then Merche closes the fair at 11:30pm
The music won’t be alone. Local dance academies and additional flamenco acts will also be part of the exciting week to accompany the headline concerts.
Traditional threshing to bring the weekend to a close.
Sunday morning you can witness a traditional threshing display (threshing is the process of separating grain seeds from the straw stalks) at Cortijo Don Elias from 11am, with talented performer Sebastian Navas and folk group Coros y Danzas de Mijas providing the tunes for the day.
Older residents and the kids all catered for too
Every funfair ride costs a flat €2.50 throughout the fair, and a daily noise-free window between 7pm and 9pm removes music and sound from the attractions so children with sensory needs can enjoy them more comfortably. Younger visitors get their own marquee at Cortijo Don Elias, run by the El Juncal association.
Older residents are invited to a tribute dinner on June 28 at 9pm held in the courtyard of CEIP Maria Zambrano. Those wishing to attend must pick up an invitation in advance. Registration is open on June 18, 19, 22, and 23 from 9am to 13:30pm at the Departamento de Mayores de Las Lagunas, located at the Centro de Participacion Activa on Calle San Benjamin. To collect a ticket, attendees must be registered residents (empadronados) in Mijas and present their municipal retiree card (carne de jubilado)
This wonderful programme has been put together to reach every age group and all tastes, music, tradition and entertainment across the five days.
